The second mic in the Oktava “100 Series” was introduced in 2005. The MK-102 features a small physical profile and flat, extended frequency response – qualities not typically found together in large diaphragm mics.

The Capsule
The MK-102 features a large 27.5 mm condenser capsule using all-brass backplate construction, precision-drilled pattern control holes and optimal 5 micron diaphragm for classic LDC microphone presence on vocals or instruments.

Capsule Housing & Body
A close-fitting housing surrounds the capsule and allows the front diaphragm to function in free-air without internal headbasket reflections. In addition, the MK-102’s unique capsule and body orientation reduces reflections between the microphone and the sound source. The MK-102 body disappears completely behind the capsule head when the mic is aimed at the sound source. This leaves only the capsule diaphragm exposed to the sound source for minimal reflections and clear-sounding recordings.

The MK-102 uses the same transformerless circuit found in the renowned MK-012 (over 90,000 in use worldwide) to deliver the alluring sound of direct phantom power applied to a large diaphragm capsule.

The Sound

On-axis - The MK-102 offers a smooth and extended frequency response with clean and accurate top end free from the harsh, excessively bright sound found in many modern microphones. Off-axis - Frequency response from 90 through 180 degrees closely resembles the on-axis sound and the attenuation of sound over this angular range is exceptionally smooth.

The MK-102 excels where the recordist desires a large diaphragm cardioid condenser mic with a flat frequency response that is maintained from 0 to 180 degrees to achieve a natural room sound spectral balance.

The ML-52-01 is a brand new improved version of Oktava’s famous ML-52 with a greatly improved windscreen, which protect a very sensitive filament from blast and moisture much better. Moreover it has an additional roll-of in low frequencies which compensates for the unavoidable bass boost that occurs with all pressure gradient transducers when they are used at close distance (proximity effect).

The stunning looks of this microphone combined with the classic sound of the double ribbon filament and the reliability expected of today's modern equipment make this a very desirable microphone.

The Oktava ML52 is suitable for use in any situation where a warm and rounded sound is required, The ribbon sound lending it an air of nostalgia whilst competing with modern condenser designs in terms of frequency response. The virtually non existent noise floor means that, used in conjunction with a good pre-amp. it is an ideal mic for digital recording.

As a true cosine or figure of eight microphone the ML52 has many advantages and uses in broadcast and installation due to the negligible sound it picks up from the sides, as well as 90 degree stereo recording. The figure of eight pattern is almost completely uniform at all frequencies.

The ML52 is eminently suited to string and brass instruments giving a sparkling but never harsh overall sound and also gives a particularly pleasing smooth sound to vocals.

Curved front panel eliminates standing waves and adds mass to the platform without increasing the footprint.

Recoil Stabilizers are available in a variety of sizes and weights to coincide with various monitors being produced today. We have produced a cross reference chart to help you select the right Recoil Stabilizer for your monitors.

Which model to choose?

After extensive listening tests, we have found that a 4:1 ratio is the minimum mass required to properly stabilize a monitor. So if you have a nearfield monitor that weighs 20lbs (8kg), you would select a Recoil that has a mass that is no less than ¼ the weight or 5lbs (2kg). To make selection as easy as possible, we have also provided a cross reference that is sorted by manufacturer and model.

Primafoam panels are a range of traditional high-density foam panels designed with the budget-conscious home studio and practice space in mind.

W- Foam Panels (Thickness: 2" (5.1cm))

Made from 1.8lb per cubic foot high-density polyurethane foam, Primafoam panels provide excellent mid and high frequency absorption. When combined with the Australis bass traps, it is possible for any room to be neutral and balanced throughout the audio listening range. Primafoam panels are finished in a UV resistant dark charcoal that helps to reduce fading over time, and are available in a variety of shapes and finishes to suit any design.

Installation is quick and simple using the included adhesive to mount the panels directly on the wall surface. If a temporary installation is favored, or if you don’t wish to mar your wall surfaces, simply adhere the panels to corrugated plastic or cardboard and tack to the wall using finishing nails. Primafoam panels are available as small Scandia™ Scatter Block wedges, 2” thick convoluted W-Foam™ sheets, and 3” thick Z-Foam™ Columns with a unique anechoic wedge styled pattern.

All Primafoam panels have been tested to comply with the California C-117 Fire and Safety specification, making them suitable for home use.

The Science
     

  An open microphone picks up a mix of direct sound (blue arrows) and reflected sound (red arrows).

 The VoxGuard baffel blocks reflected sound from entering the mic and the absorber layer minimizes reflections within the baffel allowing the dry vocal to be recorded.

 Where can you use VoxGuard? 

Application 1 – Recording Vocals In The Control Room

The most common application for the VoxGuard is using it to control the spill and reverberant field in a recording studio. Simply mount the microphone in the VoxGuard and you are set to go.
